After an unusually cold, wet winter, it was hoped that we might have an early spring.  The 8 inches of snow overnight helped to dispel that wish!

We will be having a couple of special programs this spring, with hikes led by two special guests:  Karis Day Pumphrey will have two programs for children, and David Svetich will have a program regarding birds and butterflies.  All hikes are approximately 3 hours long and moderately strenuous.  Please bring snacks and water to fortify your strength.  Dogs are not allowed because it’s a State Nature Preserve, and children should be accompanied by adults.  Please wear sturdy shoes, as the trails are not paved.  Call to reserve a spot on these hikes at (859) 744-4888.  Hikes are limited to 20 people only.   Hikes are free to members of the Friends of Lower Howard’s Creek.   Donations are appreciated.  A $5 donation is suggested for each non-member.  All hikes will start at the Preserve’s main entrance/parking lot at 1945 Athens-Boonesboro Road unless otherwise noted.

March 24, 9 a.m.   Bill Crankshaw:  Spring has sprung by this date, so we hope to see some of the ephemerals like trout lilies, early saxifrage, and Dutchman’s britches.  Meet at main entrance

ALSO on the same date, a special program:

March 24, 10 a.m.   Dave Svetich:  Dr. Svetich will show us different migratory birds, which we might not recognize, as well as a variety of butterflies and moths which should be appearing on this date
