Local History Potluck: Charlotte Dupuy @ Clark County Public Library
Feb 23 @ 6:15 pm – 8:00 pm
Local History Potluck: Charlotte Dupuy @ Clark County Public Library | Winchester | Kentucky | United States

The daughter of George and Rachel Stanley, Charlotte Dupuy was born in Cambridge, Maryland, in 1787. Her parents were owned and enslaved by Daniel Parker. Eight short years later, Dupuy was sold to James Condon for $100 and was forced to leave her family.

In 1805, at the age of 18, Charlotte was brought to Kentucky by Mr. Condon and was registered as his slave. While in Kentucky she met Aaron Dupuy, who was enslaved by Henry Clay and his wife, Lucretia. Charlotte and Aaron were married in 1806 and Charlotte was sold to the Clay family.

In 1825, the Clay family moved to Washington, D.C. as Henry Clay served as Secretary of State. Charlotte found a lawyer who filed papers for her and her children, suing for their freedom. Her petition was denied and Charlotte was jailed for refusing to return to Kentucky with the Clays. She was later emancipated by Henry Clay in 1840.

Lower Howards Creek Winter Hikes @ Lower Howard's Creek Nature Preserve
Mar 4 @ 10:00 am
Lower Howards Creek Winter Hikes @ Lower Howard's Creek Nature Preserve | Winchester | Kentucky | United States
Winter is a great time to explore Lower Howard’s Creek without its usual cover of vegetation blocking our views of its unique topography.  It’s an opportunity to visit areas not usually seen in the other three seasons of the year, and heat is not an issue!  All hikes will be at 10 a.m., at the main entrance on Athens-Boonesboro, unless otherwise noted.

February 4:  Dust off your hiking boots and come hike with Dr. Bill Crankshaw, 91 years young and the Preserves most active volunteer.
.
February 18:  The Preserve’s manager, Clare Sipple, will be leading this hike, and will take visitors to some of her favorite out of the way places within the Preserve.

March 4:  In like a lion or a lamb, the days are getting longer now and we will explore old homesteads looking for signs of spring.  Dr. Crankshaw will lead this hike.

March 18:
A few ephemeral early wildflowers may be showing themselves on this hike.  Clare Sipple will lead this hike.

Since this is a Kentucky State Nature Preserve, no dogs are allowed on the hikes.  All children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.  The terrain at the Preserve is quite steep and rocky, so please wear appropriate shoes or boots.  Group size is limited, and it is requested that you make reservations in advance.  Since these hikes are contingent on decent weather, please call the Preserve office if there is a question about suitability of the weather.  Phone number of the office is (859) 744-4888.

Ben Sollee at Leeds Center for the Arts @ Leeds Center for the Arts | Winchester | Kentucky | United States

Known for a 360 degree approach to his art, Kentucky native Ben Sollee educates as much as he entertains through his innovative style as a cellist; conveying genre-bending songwriting through electrifying performances and non-traditional album presentation. His most recent music, Steeples Pt. 2 is the second of three parts in an album release of the same name. Portioning Steeples in this way, Ben is able to break the traditional album cycle and deliver a diverse array of content to his fans. Within the past year, Ben has complemented the songs of Steeples Pt.1 and 2 with The Vanishing Point virtual reality app, film scores like Maidentrip, a technology infused production of Harold and the Purple Crayon, an interactive sculptural installation called Livestream, and much more. On October 21st he will release his first album in four years, Infowars. Through the innovative facets of his artistic portfolio he teaches his audience that the modern artist has no boundaries.

Tickets: $20
Reduced rate student tickets will be available at the door.
